How/Why I Got Into Ham Radio
The Story
This web sight is dedicated to family, friends and the fantastic ham radio hobby. Years ago I was so interested in aviation I made my plans. I picked out the plane I was going to build and was going to start learning to fly. Well, after careful consideration I realized, with 5 children, I wasn’t going to be able to afford that plan.
Over several years, starting in high school, I had been exposed to ham radio. So, since I wasn’t going to build my own plane and eventually fly the next best thing was to study for my ham license. Little did I know that ham radio is the better choice.
Ham Radio Experience
My Novice Years
I started my novice days (circa 1979) with a National NC-300 receiver and a Heathkit DX-60B transmitter. Along with the Heathkit I had a VFO. The antenna was a simple dipole. Simple but it worked.
About the only band I operated was 40 meters. As a novice I really enjoyed operating CW. When I upgraded to general I started to get away from CW and I still regret that. I have been practicing and probably could get back into CW.

Martin was a technical lead at State Farm until he followed his dream, moved to Houston TX and opened a State Farm insurance agency. That's when I lost my in-house computer consultant.

Angie
School Teacher Daughter
Teaches at a Middle school in Springfield Illinois. I expect here to be elected teacher of the year. Angie did the pin striping on the restored "Bug" pictured first. She actually did two keys.

David Davis Mansion
David Davis was Abraham Lincoln's campaign manager. He was a senator and an associate justice to the US Supreme court. His house is another must see when you visit the area. Mrs. Davis had the house built, while her husband was serving in Washington DC, at a cost of just over $70,000, a fortune for the times.
